6 Warning signs: high risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Did you know 4.6 million people in UK live with diabetes diagnosis? And another 6.3 million people have increased risk of type 2 diabetes, likely to be diagnosed in near future. What’s worse, many of these people ARE NOT AWARE they are at risk. Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease, it develops slowly over the years. Often there are NO OBVIOUS WARNING SYMPTOMS.

Are YOU at risk of Type 2 diabetes?

Check yourself here:

  1. Are you always hungry/ eat more than usual?

Did you notice your appetite increased for no reason? If you feel always hungry but your lifestyle, amount of work or exercise hasn’t changed, it may be a sign of type 2 diabetes.

Why does it matter? The mechanism of blood glucose to energy conversion is slow in type 2 diabetes. It means your body doesn’t get enough energy to maintain vital processes. To get more energy your body prompts you to eat more, raising your hunger and cravings.

  2. Do you need toilet more than usual?

Do you need a pee more often? If you lifestyle and amount of water you drink hasn’t changed, but need a pee more than usual or/and wake up several times a night to urinate, your blood glucose may be too high.

Why does it matter? Your kidneys are working hard to excrete glucose excess, prompting you to go to toilet more.

  3. Do you drink a alot / always feel thirsty?

Do you always need a drink, even if it’s not hot and you are not exercising? If you feel always thirsty in any weather, your blood glucose may be constantly high.

Why does it matter? Your kidneys filter and excrete excess glucose trying to maintain the balance. Because of the fluid loss from frequent urination, you may feel unusually thirsty all the time (known as polydipsia).

  4. Are you tired all the time even after good night sleep?

Do you feel sluggish and run down for no obvious reason? It can be a sign of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Why does it matter? Mechanism of blood glucose to energy conversion is slow in type 2 diabetes, meaning your body is not getting enough energy. Low energy means chronic fatigue and feeling tired even if not exercising or moving around much.

  5. Blurred vision. ! It is a red flag, seek medical help immediately!

Did you notice things are blurry around?

Why does it matter? Constantly high blood sugar damages blood vessels in the retina (rear part of eye). Damaged blood vessels swell and start leaking, causing blurry vision. It normally affects both eyes and can improve temporarily if your blood glucose level drops. In long term blurred vision can lead to vision loss. Don’t ignore it!

  6. Do cuts and wounds take longer to heal?

Did you notice a simple cut takes ages to heal?

Why does it matter? Constantly elevated blood glucose damages blood vessels and impairs blood circulation, meaning too slow delivery of essential nutrients, needed for healing. High blood glucose also weakens the immune system, which can slow the healing process.
